CSD Enhances Capacity of Account Officers of MFIs

To enable microfinance institutions to apply sound accounting principles to ensure high quality of financial analysis the Centre for Self-help Development conducted a three-day training program on ‘Fundamentals of Accounting in Microfinance’ in its own training hall in Kathmandu. The program took place from April 22-24, 2018 and was attended by 23 account officers from 11 different microfinance institutions. The program provided the participants with better insight on the roles and responsibilities of account officers, significance of financial analysis, importance of bank reconciliation statement and so forth. It also helped the participants to understand the concept of accounting in microfinance, the importance of voucher and supporting documents, classification of property and loan, preparation of sound financial statement, ratio analysis and so on.

The key resource person of the training was Mr. Mahendra Ban, Department head of Swabalamban Laghubitta Bikas Bank Ltd. and internal resource person was Mr. Satish Shrestha, Director of CSD. There were altogether 11 classroom sessions which were delivered through theoretical knowledge, practical exercises and group discussion. Mr. Satish Shrestha, Director of CSD, chaired the closing session. All participants provided their feedback regarding the training program and expressed their happiness of being part of this fruitful program. It was a source of motivation for the majority of the participants as it was their first participation in any training program.

During the feedback session the participants expressed their delight in being able to participate in the training programs. They mainly highlighted the importance of maintaining accounts in a traditional way in the present age of technology that has made work easier for the employees. Speaking during the session Mr. Narayan Prasad Subedi of Jeevan Bikas Samaj said, “In an age of technology where all the record keepings are done by the software, this training has made a lot of difference in the understanding of the true purpose and the process of keeping the records of the transactions.”
