11th Social Business Day and Nepal Forum

The richest 1%  of  the people around the world own whopping 90% of the world’s natural resource.  This trend has further exacerbated in these current days because of the ever widening gap between the rich and the poor and has further increased the richest people’s share and ownership of natural resources. This practice has also given leeway to unsustainable practice and rampant use of natural resource to the rich.  This unattainable practice and extensive use of natural resource will degrade our environment. This  will bring natural disasters like floods and landslides in one region and extended dry spells in other regions severely hampering the cropping pattern and food security of the world.

The issue of unemployment is a growing problem and particularly prevalent in the poorer nations around the world. The effect of natural disaster and food security have more severe repercussions on the vulnerable populations in the  poorer regions of the world.

In order to build an equitable and world based on social justice we need to change the economic model that can bear social responsibilities and establish common access to resources for sustainable consumption and conservation. In addition, the main goals of the current economic model should be zero unemployment, zero poverty, and zero carbon emissions. Prof. Mohammed Yunus, who along with Grameen Bank were jointly awarded the Noble Peace Prize “ in 2006 for their effort to create economic and social development from below”,  has put forward the concept of business model with a touch of social orientation. The Yunus Center of Bangladesh has been celebrating Social Business Day every year in the process of developing and promoting this concept of social business. Endorsing this view, the Centre for Self-help Development, Nepal and other organizations and business houses are also promoting the concept of social business here in Nepal.

Special assembly conferences are being organized around the world on the occasion of the 11th Social Business Day this year. National forums will be organized in 15 countries from June 28 to July 2, 2021 (16th to 20th of Ashad 2078) for 5 days by the Yunus Center of Bangladesh. Under this, the Nepal Forum will be organized in Nepal on June 30, 2021. This conference  will be coordinated by the Centre for Self-help Development.

The conference will be held online under the chairmanship of Shankar Man Shrestha, Chairman of Centre for Self-help Development. Prof. Yunus will be the special speaker.

On the occasion, discussions will be held on three topics and 10 sub-topics, in line with  zero poverty, zero unemployment, and zero greenhouse gas emissions. There will be 10 thematic experts in the panel who will share their views and expertise on their designated sub-topics.

An eight-member Social Business Conference Organizing Committee has been formed under the chairmanship of Mr. Shankar Man Shrestha, chairman of Centre for Self-help Development, to organize the Nepal Forum. The Nepal Forum will also prepare an action plan for the next two years and present that action plan at the International Joint Forum to be held on 18 August 2078 (July 2, 2021). The action plan is scheduled to be implemented through the Social Business Conference Organizing Committee.

Around 3 hundred individuals from national and international  banks, financial institutions, business houses, non-governmental organizations as well as experts from field of environment, education, finance, commerce, sports, youth awareness, women empowerment, employment promotion and other relevant sectors having decision making roles  will actively participate in this International Forum.
